PHOTO by JP: Going through one of the locks on the Danube.

The ship travelled mainly at night, but on this day we were sailing most of the morning, including through the Danube’s largest lock.  This quite exciting and most of us were on the top deck watching the workings of the lock.  There were several other river boats in the lock at the same time and at some stage you could almost touch the ship next to you.  This was a never to be forgotten experience and reminded me of my first trip through the Panama Canal on a smaller scale.

After passing through the locks we reached Bratislava in Slovakia and after lunch went on an included city tour.  It was a very cold, windy day but this was not a problem as we were dressed for the weather.  Seeing the Soviet era buildings, against the city’s incredible classic architecture was a huge contrast.  World War II monuments dominated many public areas and were a photographers delight.  The tour finished in the centre of the old walled town which we walked through before returning to the boat, a short walk away.

After dinner that evening we were entertained by two of the city’s finest symphony orchestra musicians who alternated between piano, violin, flute and accordian.  There is our own onboard entertainer who played wonderful piano and filled in on the few evenings that we did not have local entertainers.  Our pianist also entertained during afternoon tea held each day in the lounge.  There was an abundance of cakes and sandwiches along with a huge selection of teas.  One would never go hungry on this ship.

Most passengers head for bed where they can watch TV or complimentary DVDs as the days are very full and we need to get up early for breakfast and the next day’s tour.
