A few Great Days in Budapest, Hungary
BLOG #3 Uniworld River Cruise:
A helpful porter showed us to our room and we were so impressed. It was just twilight as we entered our room and the view was spectacular. A few feet away were several river boats, some used for evening and dinner cruises
and some about to leave on Danube cruises. On the opposite side of the river was atop the hill of Buda was the Castle bathed in spotlights and the famous Chain Bridge only a few metres away. Budapest was originally two towns split by the Danube, Buda on the hilly side and Pest on the flat side. When the Chain Bridge was built, the two towns became one and Budapest was born.
The next morning we ate an enormous buffet breakfast that was included in the tariff at the Intercontinental Hotel. When travelling I usually find that a big breakfast followed by an early dinner is more than sufficient.
Budapest is a sightseeing delight, it is very flat on the Pest side which makes walking, even for a senior like me, almost painless. Sandra cracked a brutal pace as each street, mainly cobble stoned, made it mandatory to wear really comfortable walking shoes. There were many horse and carriages available for hire that would take you around the main city areas.
Our five days in Budapest went all too quickly and it was time to board our river ship for the next part of our exciting adventure down the Danube.
It was the day before our departure, we re-read our cruise tickets and noticed a clause that said to ring a local phone number to double check on the location of the dock from which to board as these occasionally may change – bother! At this precise moment, as if by magic, the Uniworld River Beatrice sailed past our window and docked directly opposite our hotel. This was making it all too easy.
